Body lift
Extensive surgical contouring of the torso following major weight loss or circumferential skin laxity.
What the Procedure Is
A body lift removes excess skin and tissue around the torso and may combine contouring of the abdomen, flanks, back and buttock region in an individual surgical plan.
Who It May Suit
It is primarily considered for patients with stable weight and significant laxity after major weight loss, pregnancy or reduced skin elasticity.
What It Can and Cannot Address
It can improve contour and comfort but creates extensive scars and is not a weight-loss procedure. It cannot protect against future weight changes.
How the Consultation Works
Assessment covers the distribution of excess tissue, general health, weight stability, smoking and possible nutritional deficiencies. Staged surgery may be recommended for safety.
How the Procedure Is Performed
Excess tissue is removed through carefully planned circumferential incisions, and the remaining tissues are repositioned and closed in layers. The exact extent depends on anatomy.
Anaesthesia
The procedure is performed under general anaesthesia in an appropriate surgical facility with postoperative monitoring.
Recovery
Recovery is gradual and longer than after a localised procedure. Careful mobilisation, compression garments and activity restrictions are required.
Risks and Limits
Risks include bleeding, infection, seroma, delayed healing, thrombosis, asymmetry, sensory change and unfavourable scars.
When Results Are Visible
Contour changes are immediate, but swelling subsides over several months. Scars mature gradually and the result is best maintained at a stable weight.
